Local guide · Moving to Flower Mound

New home.
Know your keys.

Before the boxes block a side door or the garage becomes your default entrance, record the doors, keys and permissions that came with your home. This guide helps organize a move-in access plan, whether you are moving to an established Flower Mound neighborhood or a community that extends beyond the town's boundaries.

01 /

Walk the entrances while the handover is fresh

Start at the front door, then walk the rear and side entrances and the hinged door between the home and garage. For each one, record the key that opens it and whether the lock operates smoothly. A simple note such as ‘rear door: second key, needs pulling inward to lock’ captures two different questions: the key arrangement and a possible mechanical problem.

Include rarely used doors. A spare is less helpful if it opens only an entrance you cannot reach when the garage is closed. Keep the inventory private, and list controls or access devices for other systems separately from house keys.

02 /

Separate old-key concerns from worn hardware

Ask which copies were issued to previous occupants, family members or others. If the history is incomplete, record that uncertainty. To stop previous keys operating suitable existing locks, discuss rekeying. Whether several doors can share one key depends on the hardware, not just your preference.

If a key catches or a door needs lifting to latch, record that as a separate issue. A new key arrangement will not resolve every fit or mechanical problem. The lock repair guide explains the observations that help. Ask what can be retained, what needs attention and why any replacement is proposed before agreeing to the final scope.

03 /

Give the full service address

Bridlewood and Wellington are recognizable Flower Mound neighborhood names, but neither identifies your door. Give the house number, street and actual approach to the property. Canyon Falls requires an extra check: the community crosses Flower Mound, Argyle and Northlake. Keep the complete address and municipality together in your move-in records, and do not assume the community name establishes the town.

Local landmarks are useful orientation, not a substitute for that address. The native prairie hill known as The Mound, which gave the town its name, is at FM 3040 and FM 2499; saying ‘near The Mound’ still leaves a particular home unresolved. If a driveway, gate or side entrance affects reaching your door, explain it while arranging residential locksmith help.

04 /

Treat garage access as a separate part of the plan

Check what access information was handed over for the overhead door, and distinguish it from the key to the hinged door into the house. You might be able to enter the garage while the home-entry door remains locked, or reach the house through another entrance while the overhead door will not move. Describing those as separate systems makes a later service request much clearer.

If the moving door is crooked, visibly damaged or operating abnormally, stop using it. Do not change tensioned hardware or force it as a move-in check. The residential garage door repair page outlines symptoms to report. Ask the property contact about existing access arrangements; a house-key change does not change every way into the garage.

05 /

Permissions, then spare keys

If you rent, discuss proposed changes with the responsible owner or manager where their approval is needed. In a Lakeside building, a private apartment door and a shared entrance are different responsibilities. Record which doors belong to your request and which remain under another party's control. This also helps avoid confusing a building access device with a key to your own unit.

Call 469-702-9255 with the address, door inventory, working-key status and authorized contact. Ask about availability and the estimate for the stated work. After the agreed changes, check each affected door with its intended key and record the copies you distribute. Keep that record for the next handover.

More questions, answered
Does a new home always need all-new locks?

No. Working, suitable hardware may be considered for rekeying when the concern is old key copies. A damaged lock or a poorly fitting door needs its own assessment.

Is every Canyon Falls address in Flower Mound?

No. The community spans Flower Mound, Argyle and Northlake. Give the full address and municipality if known when arranging work.

Should the garage-to-house door be on my list?

Yes, if it is part of the private entrance arrangement you want reviewed. Keep its keyed lock separate from the overhead garage door and its controls.
